....Tip of the hat to Captain Hahn for answering Omar Vizquel to who the other old man in the league is besides 49 year old Jamie Moyer....
....I like featuring useful baseball nerd tools on The Ticker when they come along. This week take a look at the Sporting News MLB app. The app does a good job of offering stories that MLB At Bat and USA TODAY apps are not running....
....Baseball is still called the national pastime even though it seems surpassed by the NFL in the popular national conscience. What is it about baseball, a game that seems to lack the action or intensity of the NFL that helps it remain viable after all these years (longer than any other in the US)?....

....Tip of the hat to the Rays for 71 of it's members (players, managers and office staff) shaved their heads in a show of support for raising money for pediatric cancer research....
....And a tip of the hat to Jamie Moyer for being 49 and still showing up to compete for a spot on a club. He shares the distinction of being one of two active players from the 1980's. Who is the other?....
....Today's player from The Ballplayers encyclopedia: Otto Preminger RHP Cincinnati 1896-99. Preminger was a showman that knowingly projected his pitches to the batter (and everyone else in the stadium) by using different wind-ups for each pitch. He named his pitches as well and would often call the name while throwing. He was surprisingly successful for 3 years....

....Albert smacked his first two dingers yesterday. If you are a Cards fan this will be the last time I mention Albert's doubles and dingers....
...."I'm an athlete, I can play 'em all. You can put me in left, right, center. No matter where. Put me at first, second, third. You can even put me on the bump and I'll throw the knuckleball." Sounds like Ricky Henny but it's Tony Plush....
....Today's player from The Ballplayers encyclopedia (selected by choosing page 1164 because there is no 1664): Doc White LHP 1901-13 Phillies, White Sox. Doc was a graduate in dental surgery (holllerrrr) and was the mainstay of the Hitless Wonders White Sox pitching staff. He was a violinist, balladeer, coach and traveling evangelist....

....I suppose when a player is around for 18 seasons you may have no option but to warm up to him. I've never been much of a fan of Chipper Jones but when he hinted at retirement yesterday I felt just a bit of fondness for him. While Braves fans probably genuinely feel that towards him I think my fondness is rooted in nostalgia. Well done Larry....
....The Red Sox got over on the Yankees yesterday 1-0 but the bigger story is Bobby Valentine's first taste of the rivalry after being Bobby Valentine and stoking the fire before their meeting. By my judgment he seems to be a Yep Nope....
....Today's player from The Ballplayers encyclopedia: George "Piano Legs" Gore. He was signed by Cap Anson after playing in an exhibition game. In 1880 he won the NL batting crown hitting .360. While Anson discovered and signed him he also called him, "too much the playboy," and released him....
....My bad to Pradeepa. I shook the man's hand yesterday and didn't wish him a happy birthday. Happy birthday....

....Ozzie Guillen accomplished the rare feat of being ejected from an exhibition game yesterday. After getting ejected, Guillen had to take a long walk to the visiting clubhouse, providing smart-ass Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine the chance to wave goodbye....
....Phillies' Vance Worley struck out eight in four perfect innings yesterday against the Pirates....
....Today's player from The Ballplayers encyclopedia: Karl Spooner LHP 1954-55 Brooklyn Dodgers. Spooner joined Dem Bums at the end of the 1954 season and wowed the baseball world by pitching back-to-back shutouts against the Giants and Pirates striking out 27 in two games....

....The 2012 Who's Who in Baseball is consistently one of my favorite annual purchases. This year's cover features Justin Verlander getting ready to deliver a Cy Young winning strikeout....
....This week we will feature random players from the 1228 page The Ballplayers encyclopedia. Today's player: Bill DeLancey. DeLancey was a left handed catcher that was once selected by Branch Rickey for his all-time team. He put in work with the "Gas House Gang" and was especially adept at handling the Cardinals eccentric pitchers. He played 219 ML games....
....As Opening Day approaches I am gathering all necessary companion pieces. I'd love to hear what your Opening Day beverage of choice is. Be specific Parker....

....Rays lefty David Price suffered a freak towel injury after his second inning of pitching yesterday against the Tigers that forced him to miss the next inning of work. "...the towel kind of catches the back of my head and it pulls my neck forward and I just felt it a little bit in the back of my neck." This is his third towel injury....
....So freak injuries it is: Sosa sneezing, Boggs losing balance while taking cowboy boots off, Randy Veres punching his headboard in his hotel to quiet noisy neighbors, Glenallen Hill injuring himself running away from spiders in a nightmare....
....Anyone else have an aversion to listening to or watching Spring games? To me this is like listening to a single from an upcoming album from a favorite band. I will not listen. Just give me the whole thing on its proper release date. Though I did like the 10 minute preview of John Carter on YouTube....
